2011 was an extremely cool year by Washington standards, a cool spring lead to later than normal budbreak, and didn't give way to warmer weather until mid-June that promoted a good fruit set. July warmed up a little more, while August moderated into the mid 80's and created prefect growing conditions to harvest. A balanced canopy management and deficit irrigation program stimulated nice flavor development and a moderate crop load. The fruit was thinned for uniform maturation and flavor concentration. Harvest began with Merlot for this blend on September 29, which is quite late for Merlot from our vineyard.
